Lionel Town-based Watsonton Primary School reclaimed the Insports Clarendon Primary Schools football title after a 1-0 win over Effortville Primary at Mineral Heights Primary School last week.

In a hard-fought game, Romario Benjamin scored the decisive goal for the Romaine Hall-coached team.

Hall noted that the key to winning against the more fancied Effortville Primary was keeping their two main players out of the game.

"The final was really hectic. Effortville have a really good team, a strong team with good players, especially the number seven and number 12. From we watched the semi-finals, we realised they would be the two main persons for Effortville, so the instruction was just to get them out of the game," he reasoned.

"Once we got them out of the game, we knew we were going to have a good game and we were going to upset them."

Linchpins Davin McKay (eight goals) and Romario Benjamin (seven) accounted for Watsonton's 15 goals over the campaign.

"We had an unbeaten season. We only conceded three goals for the entire season. Our leading goalscorer, Davin McKay, has been playing for four years, along with our goalscorer in the final, Romario Benjamin, who is the cousin of McKay," Hall shared.

"Our objective was not to concede more than five goals, and we faced some top teams. This is my first year at Watsonton as a PE coach and coach of the football team and it means a lot to the Watsonton community.

"The young guys got to showcase their talent, so coaches at the high school could see them, and that was also good," he added.

Midfielder Esat Forrester was the competition's MVP, while Hall was named the Coach of the Tournament.
