Cops increase presence in farming communities
In response to the anticipated surge in criminal activity, particularly praedial larceny, heading into the Yuletide season, the Jamaica Constabulary Force's (JCF) Agricultural Protection Branch (APB) has bolstered its operational presence in farming communities.
APB Head Senior Superintendent Oral Pascoe stated that the increase in patrols by teams across all five policing areas was crucial.
"I have instructed APB teams to have boots on the ground, especially at nights, as livestock is often transported during this time," said Pascoe. This strategic enhancement directly addresses the historical trend of increased praedial larceny, theft of livestock, and, to a lesser extent, the theft of farming equipment during this period. The APB's proactive measures are crucial in safeguarding the remaining agricultural assets and preventing further economic hardship for farmers already reeling from the impact of Hurricane Melissa. By deterring theft, the APB helps farmers retain their remaining resources, which are essential for replanting, restocking, and ultimately, contributing to the national food supply.
The JCF is also appealing to citizens to consume meat, fish, and poultry from credible sources, as this is vital to public health safety as there is a current practice of livestock that is not fit for consumption being sold to citizens.
