Alexander Bicknell's eighth-minute strike carried Waterhouse Football Club to a 1-0 win over defending champions Cavalier Soccer Club in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) football match at Stadium East last night.

The 20-year-old, who transferred from Lexios Under-23s in Portugal, was scoring his first JPL goal and assistant coach Jemaine Miller had high praises for the former national youth midfielder.

"Zander is always hardworking. He shields the backline very well. That goal today was special. He spoke to me about having long range shots and he got one today and we are grateful," Miller said.

"We knew we would get the goal and we stayed behind the ball and got a wonderful goal from Alexander Bicknell.

"I'ts a wonderful victory, we know what Cavalier is about. They wanted to get in the space behind and we worked to protect the space behind," Miller added.

It was attack for attack in the opening minute, and Bicknell fired Waterhouse into the lead with a spectacular shot from outside the box, that flew by Jaedine White in goal.

Denardo Thomas could have made it 2-0 moments later, but turned his effort into the side netting.

Near the half-hour mark, Cavalier tried to control possession, while Waterhouse looked to catch them on the break.

Waterhouse came closest to a goal before half-time, but Bicknell's shot drifted wide of the post.

The two teams continued to trade attacks after the break and Shaquille Stein should have pulled Cavalier level after he was through on goal. However, he, inexplicably, miskicked and allowed goalkeeper Akeem Bernard to take possession.

Waterhouse dropped deeper into their half as the game wore on and Cavalier piled on the pressure.

But Akuma Johnson had a glorious chance to put the game to bed for Waterhouse, but he put the ball wide with White at his mercy

Cavalier came inches from an equaliser 12 minutes from time, but Luis Watson's shot cannoned off the post, across goal and back into play.

Cavalier's assistant coach, Everdean Scarlett, said goalscoring continues to be a concern, and that it was a disappointing result.

"You must feel disappointed losing a game like this," he said. "The game is about creating chances and we created numerous chances which we could have scored and won the game. But that's football."

In the first game of the doubleheader, Anthony Nelson scored a double to give Tivoli Gardens a 2-1 win over Spanish Town Police FC, which ended the game with 10 players. Anil Ferguson scored for Spanish Town Police FC. His teammate Shaqueem Holness was sent off for a second yellow card in the 82nd minute.
