Upbeat coach Daley expects big performance from U21 netballers
Head coach of Jamaica's World Under-21 netball team, Annett Daley, is upbeat about the squad's chances at this year's tournament set for Gibraltar, September 19-28.
Speaking with STAR Sports yesterday on the eve of the team's departure, Daley said she was satisfied with the team's preparations.
"I am extremely happy with the team's preparation and I'm also glad we're leaving several days ahead of the tournament. That gives us time for fine-tuning before the first match," she said.
Travelling today with Daley are 12 players, the team doctor, physiotherapist, and manager. Assistant coach Nardia Hanson will depart on Friday, linking up in England with three United Kingdom-based players.
"This is a plus for the girls," Daley explained. "For many, it's their first time travelling. Having those extra days before competition will help ease their nerves."
The coach was impressed with what she saw in training leading up to departure.
"These players are showing confidence and discipline. They may not have the experience of past teams, but the collaboration and comradeship have been outstanding," she said.
She added that their final training session tested different game scenarios. "I was pleased with how they responded. If they display this level of play at the tournament, I am confident they will do very well."
Daley also expressed gratitude that all 15 squad members, including reserves, are able to travel.
"I want to thank our sponsors who made this possible. At one point, we were worried about leaving out the three reserves. Thanks as well to the clubs, umpires, senior team, National Housing Trust, and the men's team who all helped with practice matches," she said.
Jamaica has been drawn in Pool C alongside England, Tonga, Wales, and Sri Lanka. The top two teams advance to the next round.
"I am confident we will progress," Daley said. "But we want to finish first to avoid Australia in the next round."
Jamaica's best performance at the tournament came in 2000 in Cardiff, Wales, when they finished second. They also secured third place in 2003 in Australia and 2009 in New Zealand. New Zealand are the defending champions, having won in Botswana in 2017.
